who we are

Our History

In September 2019, Emmanuel Mirus Ponon founded Youth Advocates for the Philippines (YAP), Inc. after being elected as the Philippine Officer of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) University Student Council Union. Before ending his tenure in YAP, the organization gathered 10,000 volunteers that served over 150,000 beneficiaries through its 250 initiatives across the archipelago. After seeing the rapid growth of YAP, his colleagues urged him to scale after being invited to join the ASEAN Youth Experts meeting, which led to the ASEAN Youth Advocates Network, which expanded to ten countries, having one global chapter and ten independent country chapters which together with YAP reached more than 300,000 beneficiaries in 16 months.

The creation of GYAN was not planned, but opportunities along the way from our founder being invited to prestigious,  exclusive youth events organized by the United Nations Volunteers, United Nations SDG Action Campaign, United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, United Nations ECOSOC Youth Forum together being selected as a Global Teen Leader for 2021 by the We Are Family Foundation founded by three-time Grammy award winner Nile Rodgers.

Today, the Global Youth Advocates Network continues to make advocacy a lifestyle run by the youth for the youth and the citizenry’s tomorrow.
